One sometime wish that one could push the walls of our beloved homes. As it is rarely possible, let me show you some ways that we help your room look bigger. It is all about tricking the eye to 'see' a larger space. Here are some of the best tricks in the book:
1. Colour choice.
Use light colours throughout as they will make the walls to visually recede. And paint the ceiling the same hue as the walls, it will tame down the shadows that define and visually 'contain' the space. When the walls and ceiling are the same color, it’s harder for your eye to tell where the room’s parameters start and end, so the room looks larger.
Let as much natural light as possible into a room as it opens up space and gives it a character. Avoid heavy or 'thrilly' curtains. Instead, chose flat blinds that will roll up all the way up to the ceiling if necessary so as to not block the light coming in. Whenever possible, try to match the colour of the wall to the one of the blinds to make them visually disappear when they are rolled down.
3. Eye tricker.
Strippes are an great way to make your room visually bigger. You could choose a stripy rug or paint some strips on your walls to increase the impression of space. It does so as it creates a focal point that your eyes will be drawn to. So use them horizontally in a narrow space or vertically if you want your room to look longer. The rules also applies when you choose to put parquet or laminate flooring.
Choose raised sofas and armchairs as it creates a sense of light and space. Your eyes will 'see' through the gap to the end of the room. Don't pick bulky sofas or heavy furniture but instead chose them raised from the floor. Pick smaller sofas and chairs or if you want a large sofa, just stick with the one. In small living rooms, one large couch instead of multiple small pieces actually decreases the look of clutter and makes a room feel bigger. Pull them out slightly from the wall, it does the trick.
5. Declutter the space.
Try to dispose of everything you have not used for a year or that isn't necessary or beautiful to you. You know me, I am all about decluttering. It will increase your wellbeing. Pick or create organised storage solutions and furniture wherever possible. There are lots of clever furniture with storage out there.
7. Reflect the light.
It is one of the oldest trick in the book. Installing a large mirror or a set of smaller mirrors will bounce the light and make a small room appear larger. In small bedrooms replace your cupboard doors with mirrored ones. The effect tends to work best when you can take the mirrors from floor to ceiling and wall to wall.
9. Create clever shelving.
A floor to ceiling and wall to wall bookcase is a trick that will create an impressive focal point and visually expand space by pushing the walls and ceiling out. You can chose to colour code your books to add fun. But avoid filling up every shelf in a room; leave some of them half empty (use plants or a decorative object) and spacious for an airy feel and to make the ceiling look higher. Painting the back wall a contrasting color will create depth.
10. Add touches of colour.
Because the wall colours will be light or neutral, it is a great idea to add some touches of colours to the mix. It will add some character to the room as well as unifying the decor. Stick to a couple of similar colours or hues as a mix would only create visual clutter.
